Perito Moreno Glacier from Estancia Nibepo Aike. A tour from the steppe to the glacier. The history of the first pioneers and a typical Patagonian ranch. A combination of gaucho skills, barbecued lamb, boat ride and hike; all the faces of Los Glaciares National Park.
We leave from Calafate taking route 15, known as “the road of the estancias”, which connects different stories of Patagonia: former natives, pioneers and settlers. A landscape that has been marked by the glaciers, a transition from the steppe to the Andes Range. We get to know the environment by its vegetation, steppe and beech forest.
Once in Los Glaciares National Park, at the end of the road we arrive at Estancia Nibepo Aike,
where all the stories merge. The first settler arrived here more than 100 years ago. Today this ranch has cattle, sheep and horses. We visit the pens and sheds, where we see a demonstration of manual sheep shearing. A typical Patagonian barbecued lamb with a salad buffet is served in the quincho (barbecue area).
Afterwards we walk to the pier Glaciar Sur, where we go on board and start sailing the Rico and South arms of Lake Argentino, while we see mounts Moreno and Adriana and Peninsula Magallanes. We disembark on Playa de las Monedas, only accessible by boat. Here we´ll take a gentle walk through the beech forest, where there are still wild cattle that have remained from the time before the creation of the National Park. The trail goes among low deciduous beech trees until we see Perito Moreno Glacier from the rocky beach.
We go back on board to sail along the south face of the glacier, a good opportunity to see some calvings and understand how it flows towards Peninsula Magallanes, until producing every now and then the famous natural dam and rupture. We disembark at the Pier Bajo La Sombra to drive 6 km to the walkways, to enjoy them after the most crowded time of the day.
Starting from the highest point we can walk all the way down to the Icebergs Channel enjoying the Glacier from many different angles. After more than an hour and a half on the walkways we return in our vehicle.
